Chile’s President-Elect Signals Political and Generational Shift

December 22, 2021

Episode Notes:

On Sunday, Chile elected the 35-year-old Gabriel Boric as its new president with 55 percent of the vote. Boric, a former student activist, has called for rewriting Chile’s Pinochet-era constitution and transforming the country into a Scandinavian-style welfare state.

To discuss what this means for Chile, we’re joined by Patricio Navia. Patricio is professor of liberal studies at New York University, as well as adjunct assistant professor at its Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies. He is also a professor of political science at Diego Portales University in Chile and author of a number of books about Chilean politics.
