John W. Spencer is a contributing editor at War on the Rocks and an internationally recognized expert on military operations in dense urban areas, megacities, urban and subterranean warfare. He served in the California State Guard where he was director of Urban Warfare Training for the 40th Infantry Division. He served over 25 years in the Army as an infantry soldier. He also served as the chair of urban warfare studies, co-director of the Urban Warfare Project, and deputy director for the Modern War Institute at West Point.
