Mexico’s President Visits Washington Amidst Pandemic, Controversy

July 10, 2020

Episode Notes:

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, commonly known as AMLO, visited Washington this week to meet with President Donald Trump. The trip was highly symbolic. It was López Obrador’s first foreign visit since taking power in December 2018, and the first meeting between the two heads of state since signing the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement, the successor trade agreement to NAFTA. The decision to come to Washington was controversial in Mexico, where Trump remains deeply unpopular, and among Democrats in Congress, who accused the Mexican president of politicizing the bilateral relationship.

Christopher Wilson — the deputy director of the Mexico Institute at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars — joins the Warcast to describe the significance of López Obrador’s visit and what it means for bilateral ties going forward
