Britain’s Choice on Huawei and 5G

January 22, 2020

Episode Notes:

The British government will soon decide whether to allow Huawei to participate in its 5G network. Reports suggest that Prime Minister Boris Johnson is in favor of allowing the Chinese company a role in the “periphery” of its network, but will ban it from the “core.” Washington strongly opposes this option. It has argued that such a move would enable Chinese espionage and give it leverage over Britain in a crisis. London’s decision will have economic and geopolitical implications for years to come.

We spoke with Dr. John Hemmings for more insight. John is an Associate Professor at Daniel K. Inouye Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies, and an expert on Northeast Asian security with a special interest in 5G and national security.
