Ostpolitik, Germany's historical strategy of diplomatic engagement with Russia, has found a new home in the far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD), not as policy, but as identity politics. Even though the AfD scored big in recent state elections, Ian Klinke and Jakub Eberle aren't confident that victory will suddenly reverse Germany's stricter Russia policy, solidified after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. So if Germany's interests lie in pivoting toward neither Russia nor the United States, what should it do instead?
