Episode Notes:
As French and U.S. involvement in the Sahel region of Africa declined, jihadist groups — especially Jamaat Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin — have expanded their activities. Recent jihadist and separatist attacks in Mali particularly demonstrated the fragility of some of the region's governments. Kerry talks with James Paterson, who wrote "Western Withdrawal, Jihadist Expansion: How the Sahel Became Ground Zero for Global Terrorism," about how Jamaat Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin and other militant groups have gained more power and why that raises risks even outside of Africa.
