Episode Notes:
In the 732 Battle of Tours, Frankish forces led by Charles Martel defeated Umayyad forces raiding from the Iberian Peninsula. In "The (Un)importance of the Battle of Tours," Daniel Wollenberg argued that the importance of the battle was later amplified by Frankish propaganda and turned into an oversimplified story about Christian defenders versus Muslim invaders. Kerry talks with Daniel about the battle's historical context and how it became a myth with modern political salience. They wrap up by reflecting on how some people distort and use stories of the past to support their preferred narratives of our world today.
