Nuclear-Powered Submarines and Australia

September 21, 2021

Episode Notes:

The blockbuster agreement between Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States (or AUKUS) has led to an upgrade in already close ties between Canberra and Washington, renewed attention to the naval balance of power in the Indo-Pacific, and a major crisis in diplomatic relations between France and the United States. Today, we’re going to focus on the submarine element of the deal.

To discuss technical details about submarines and the AUKUS agreement, we’re joined today on the Warcast by Tom Shugart. Tom is an adjunct senior fellow with the Defense Program at the Center for a New American Security. Tom served for over 25 years in the U.S. Navy as a submarine warfare officer and commanded the nuclear-powered fast attack submarine USS Olympia from 2013 to 2016.
