Another Coup in Mali

May 26, 2021

Episode Notes:

On Monday night, soldiers detained the president and prime minister of Mali, marking the west African country’s second coup in less than a year. Col. Assimi Goita, who was serving as interim vice president and led the coup last summer, ordered arrest of the country’s civilian leaders after a cabinet reshuffle in which two senior Army officers were replaced without his consultation. Mali has been in turmoil since 2012, when an armed rebellion overtook the northern part of the country. French counterterrorism forces and a U.N. mission have helped restore some stability, but terrorism remains an acute threat in Mali.

Michael Shurkin — works for 14 North Strategies and an expert on African and European security issues — joins the Warcast to discuss the coup and what’s next for Mali.
