Northern Ireland Riots

April 7, 2021

Episode Notes:

Mounting anger in Northern Ireland’s Unionist (or pro-British) community turned violent this past week. Forty-one police officers were injured in greater Belfast and Londonderry (or Derry) after rioters attacked police, threw petrol bombs, and set cars on fire. Ten people have been arrested so far. The immediate cause of the riots involves disaffection over the Northern Ireland Protocol between the United Kingdom and the European Union — which effectively places a border between Northern Ireland and Great Britain in the Irish Sea — alongside heated political rhetoric from Unionist political leaders who feel betrayed by the British government. Some analysts fear that, given the contested and dysfunctional politics of the province, the Loyalist violence of the past week might escalate in the coming months.

Aaron Edwards — a senior lecturer in defense and international affairs at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and the author of several books on terrorism and counter-insurgency, including UVF: Behind the Mask — joins the Warcast to shed some light on what’s going on in Northern Ireland.
