Mounting Tensions in North and East Africa

Tensions have been rising in recent weeks in north-eastern Africa between loose regional alliances. Egypt and Eritrea are at odds with Ethiopia and Sudan over a number of issues, including contested islands in the Red Sea, the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam project, and foreign influences – with Turkey increasing its military and development presence in Sudan, while the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia have increased their presence in Eritrea. Lauren Ploch Blanchard of the Congressional Research Service discusses.
