October 18, 2017

Episode Notes:

Four U.S. soldiers were killed in an ambush in Niger on October 4th, drawing attention to the American military presence in that country, and the region generally. Andrew Lebovich, an expert on security in the Sahel, spoke with Jason Fritz about the background of U.S. operations in Niger, what happened during the ambush, the groups most likely to have executed the attack, and the political fallout. Andrew, currently in Senegal conducting research, is a doctoral candidate in African History at Columbia University and a visiting fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations.
