War on the Rocks is getting ready to expand and we are looking for a new managing editor.
War on the Rocks, a Washington, DC-based media company, is getting ready to grow from a 2-person organization to something larger and we are looking for a new Managing Editor.
This person will be responsible for the oversight and management of day-to-day editorial operations. This includes:
- Supervising assistant editors
- Coordinating social media campaigns with Editor-in-Chief and Director of Social Media
- Managing the editorial calendar
- Coordination of channel editors (Molotov Cocktail, Charlie Mike, etc)
- Providing the Editor-in-Chief with regular updates on all matters of content as necessary
- Posting articles and content
Skills and experience required:
- Attention to detail
- Basic knowledge and experience with WordPress
- Editorial experience
- Exceptional and elegant written English
- Ability to communicate effectively briefly and at length in writing to different audiences
- Public speaking
- Patience
- Subject matter familiarity with a broad array of defense and foreign policy issues
- Deep specialization in at least one defense/foreign policy subject matter area
- A network of contacts among thought leaders
- Ability to multi-task, juggling a dizzying number of balls in the air without letting them drop
- An MA or PhD is strongly preferred, as is a publication record in peer-reviewed academic journals
- Experience in the military or U.S. government is also strongly preferred
This is a demanding, fast-paced position with immense responsibility, far beyond a normal, 9 to 5 job. A great deal will be expected of you every day of the week.
