War on the Rocks is Going Dry

April 1, 2014

After receiving a deluge of emails on the subject, War on the Rocks is – as of today – disassociating itself from alcohol.  It was fun and often funny to be the world’s only booze-themed foreign policy/defense web magazine, but we now understand that promoting the consumption of alcohol is wrong.  As many of our readers have argued, along with representatives of the Traditional Values Coalition and the American Family Association, it is important that a website focusing on a family issue like war be more sober in its approach.

Thank you for your support. We are always eager to respond to the concerns of our readers.

As soon as our new domain is set up (this also is giving us an opportunity to redesign our website), you can find us at WarWithClubSoda.Com (preview of the new site here).

Ryan Evans is the assistant director at the Center for the National Interest and the editor-in-chief of War on the Rocks.

  1. Come on.. Really?!
In every movie and TV show, when people are talking war and strategy, they’re drinking liquor on the rocks.. I never thought “damned I need a drink at 8am” cause I was reading news on a website “on the rocks”…
Really?! Why not “War holding teddybears”? Or “War with flowers because war is wrong, flowers are good”??!!

    1. You’re right..!
But the saddest part is.. for us, foreigners, american culture, and americans seem so.. weird and irrational, it was plausible..!!

  2. As a canadian, I’m flabbergasted how people in the US are.. hard to understand…
United States of America, homeland of the NRA, probably the most violent “civilized” country, the most advanced country but where millions of citizens don’t have any medical protection…
And readers are offended because this website is called “war on the rocks”?!?!
And they aren’t offended because of the “war”.. no no no! they’re freakin offended because it’s “on the rocks”…
And were not talking about Google here, or Disney.. this site is about war, politic, strategy… I think the “targeted readers” are all grown man and woman!!!!

    1. @djobert

As an American, I’m constantly amazed at how thin-skinned and insecure Canadians are about their country and how they can’t take any criticism of it from Americans without turning into a frothing at the mouth caricature.

      Also, it’s April 1st, sonny.

  3. I’m very sorry to hear you guys are going dry. I support your decision, especially since children can view this site without restrictions. Talking about the children, I’m willing to dispose of the booze to keep it out if the childrens’ hands.

  4. That’s too bad. Fortunately, I found a competitor who has refused to cave into peer pressure. War With Wine Coolers (WWWC) is doing awesome stuff about the Cuban listening station set up in the Florida Keys and the Ukranian counter-occupation of Kamchatka.
